Speak Out for Comprehensive Sex Education
Currently there are three separate federal programs that fund abstinence-only-until marriage programs, despite the fact that they have been proven to be ineffective and harmful. There is no dedicated federal funding for comprehensive sex education. To work toward ensuring that young people have access to the unbiased, scientifically sound health information they need to make responsible life decisions, the Responsible Education About Life (REAL) Act (HR 1551/ S 611) would establish the first dedicated federal funding, in the form of grants to states, for the purpose of conducting comprehensive sex education programs that are age-appropriate and medically accurate. This bill was reintroduced on March 17, 2009 in both the House and Senate.
