For years, pharmaceutical companies have sold birth control pills and supplies to college health centers and health care providers serving low-income women at a dramatically discounted price. Unfortunately, Congress made a technical error when writing a new law and took away this option. Now the cost of birth control in many clinics is rising. Low income individuals who had been able to purchase their oral contraceptives for $5-$10 a pack are now being asked to pay $40-$50 for those same pills. In order to fix this, Rep. Joseph Crowley (D-NY) and Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) introduced the Prevention Through Affordable Access Act (HR 4054 and S 2347), a bill that aims to bring down birth control costs at college clinics and safety-net providers by restoring their ability to purchase low-cost birth control.
