Speak Out Today for a Strong Recovery in Haiti

On January 12, 2010, Haiti suffered a devastating earthquake that claimed countless lives and devastated the country's infrastructure. While the rescue efforts that are currently under way are an essential part of the recovery process, there is a great deal of work yet to come. That Haiti owes nearly $900 million in international debt to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank, and other global creditors will only inhibit the rebuilding process. Haiti will never be able to move forward if it continues to be saddled with debts that were determined on an antiquated and unjust scale. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner can use his influence to encourage debt relief for Haiti by persuading international lending institutions and countries to do the right thing and drop Haiti's debt, and by ensuring that any US aid is offered in the form of grants rather than loans.

I urge you to help Haiti's reconstruction efforts by supporting the cancellation of Haiti's remaining debts to international creditors like the IMF and World Bank, and to ensure that any disaster relief assistance be offered as grants rather than loans.

While the debt relief extended to Haiti in June 2009 was incredibly important, the earthquake on January 12, 2010 has left that country with tremendous new challenges. If Haiti is to recover, the nearly $900 million in international debt still owed by Haiti must be canceled. I urge you to use the United States' vote on the Executive Boards of the IMF and IDB to secure cancellation of Haiti's remaining debts to these institutions. Further, while arrangements are worked out for cancellation, I urge you to call for a moratorium for debt service payments from Haiti to these institutions, without interest accruing.

Additionally, thank you for working to ensure that any new funds extended to Haiti be given in the form of grants -- rather than loans that need to be repaid. In doing so, you help ensure that the Haitian people can focus on the monumental task of rebuilding their nation.
