The short explanation of this alert was:

The purpose of the US Census is to gather information and data about the United States population. This constitutionally mandated effort is used to distribute congressional seats to states and to allocate funding and services. The accuracy of this data is critical to ensuring that these allocations are made accurately. However, the Census Bureau has decided that when it collects the returned census surveys from married same-sex couples, it will alter their responses and list them as "unmarried partners." As a result of this arbitrary, political decision, the Census Bureau is setting itself up to fail in its attempts to collect accurate data in the 2010 Census and it is violating the rights of states to have their laws respected and upheld.
