IconUrge Congress to Speak Out Against Child Marriage Abroad

Worldwide, there are approximately 51 million girls under the age of 18 who are married, frequently to significantly older men. Early marriage deprives girls of basic human rights and has many serious consequences. Child brides are disproportionately vulnerable to domestic violence, bonded labor, HIV/AIDS, and complications in childbirth. The International Protecting Girls by Preventing Child Marriage Act (HR 3175) in the House and the International Child Marriage Prevention and Protection Act (S 1998) in the Senate would require the US government to develop a comprehensive strategy to prevent child marriage as part of its human rights efforts abroad.
