Urge Congress to Hold the Perpetrators of Genocide Accountable
Recently, the International Criminal Court (ICC) charged Omar al-Bashir, President of Sudan, with war crimes and crimes against humanity. These charges sent the strong message that the international community will not condone nor turn a blind eye to the on-going genocide in Darfur. Now, Congress has an opportunity to weigh in with a resolution (H Res 241) that commends the ICC for bringing charges against al-Bashir and calls upon the international community to help bring him to justice and pressure his government to end the genocide. In addition, the resolution condemns the expulsion of international aid agencies from the region -- a devastating move made earlier this year by the Sudanese government that threatens the lives of the more than 1.1 million people who rely on that aid for water, food, and medical treatment.

I urge you to cosponsor H Res 241, introduced by Rep. Alcee Hastings, which commends the International Criminal Court (ICC) for issuing a warrant for the arrest of Sudan President Omar al-Bashir for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

Four years ago, Congress and President Bush took leadership by declaring that the atrocities in Darfur are genocide. As long as the genocide continues, Congress must work with the international community to hold the President of Sudan accountable for his crimes.

H Res 241 does just that. It expresses support for the ICC warrant and hope that it will usher in peace and stability in Darfur. Further, it denounces the expulsion of international aid agencies from the region -- a devastating move made earlier this year by the Sudanese government that threatens the lives of the more than 1.1 million people who rely on that aid for water, food, and medical treatment.

As a world leader, the US must continue to speak out for the people of Darfur.

On April 21, we mark Holocaust Remembrance Day and are reminded that we must do everything possible to combat genocide. Let your actions give meaning to the words "never again": cosponsor H Res 241.
