IconUrge Congress to Address Hunger in the Farm Bill

Work on the Farm Bill, critical legislation that contains important improvements to the Food Stamp Program and the Emergency Food Assistance Program (TEFAP) began last year, but time is finally running out. The current Farm Bill expires soon, and if a new bill isn't finished Congress is likely to revert to existing law, a result that would be devastating to the millions of individuals who rely on government nutrition programs. House and Senate leaders are currently working in a conference committee to reconcile the differences between the House and Senate versions of this legislation. One of the sticking points is that the House-approved bill contains more money -- a total of $11.5 billion -- in a new ten-year nutrition title, spending that is critical to improve food stamp benefits, food stamp access, and increased TEFAP commodity purchases.
