Promote Workplace Rights: Tell Senators to Confirm Nominees to the EEOC
Early in 2009, President Obama nominated several qualified individuals, including Chai Feldblum, to serve as a Commissioner to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the government body responsible for investigating and pursuing charges against employers who discriminate in their employment practices. On December 11, 2009, the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee voted to send her confirmation to the full Senate. Unfortunately, despite Ms. Feldblum's impressive qualifications, she has not yet been confirmed, a fact that threatens the civil rights of millions of Americans who are protected by the EEOC. The Senate will have the opportunity to vote to confirm these nominees when they return to Washington, DC, following their holiday recess.

I am writing in strong support of the confirmation of the pending nominees to serve as Commissioners of the United States Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). The EEOC plays an essential role in ensuring that our nation's employment nondiscrimination laws are enforced.

One the greatest challenges the EEOC will face in the coming months is the effective enforcement of the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA). One of the nominees, Chai Feldblum, is an ideal candidate to aid the Commission in the effective implementation and enforcement of that law. A leading expert and scholar in the area of disability rights, Ms. Feldblum played a leading role in drafting both the original Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the ADAAA which reaffirmed the original Congressional intent in provisions of the ADA, including those pertaining to employment.

Feldblum is currently serving as a tenured professor at the Georgetown University Law Center and director of its Federal Legislation and Administrative Clinic. She is one of the highly qualified candidates awaiting confirmation to serve as Commissioners on the EEOC. I strongly urge you to vote for the confirmation of these nominees.
