The so-called "Marriage Protection Amendment" (SJ Res 1) would write discrimination into the US Constitution. This amendment would define marriage as a union that can only exist between a man and a woman -- denying same-sex couples the protections and legal benefits accorded to spouses in heterosexual marriages. If passed, it would be the first constitutional amendment to restrict the rights of a particular group of people -- setting a dangerous precedent.
