Ask Congress to Fully Fund the Violence Against Women Act
In 1994, in an effort to address the devastating realities of domestic violence, Congress passed the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA). VAWA was the first federal legislation to acknowledge domestic violence and sexual assault as crimes, and to provide federal resources to encourage community-coordinated responses. Unfortunately, the President's Fiscal Year 2009 budget would drastically cut the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) and the Victims of Crime Act (VOCA) Fund, and would offer inadequate funding for the Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (FVPSA). Specifically, his budget proposes: a $120 million cut from VAWA; the elimination of the balance of the VOCA fund, and only $122.6 million for the Family Violence Prevention Services and Act (FVPSA) -- $52.4 million less than the level for which it was authorized. These cuts would endanger victims' lives, as these programs are already struggling to come up with the resources necessary to continue to combat violence against women and serve those in need.
