Urge Congress to End Iraq War
March 19 marks the fifth anniversary of the war in Iraq -- a war that has cost thousands of lives and drained US economic resources. Congress has pending legislation which offers a viable way to move from war to diplomacy in Iraq. In October 2007, Rep. David Price (D-NC) introduced legislation that calls for the implementation of the Iraq Study Group's recommendation that deeper diplomatic engagement commence to move towards ending the war in Iraq. The New Diplomatic Offensive for Iraq Act (HR 3797) mandates and monitors comprehensive regional diplomacy, as recommended by the Iraq Study Group. The bill also goes further, directing the president to designate a special envoy to implement the plan, urging him to work with the UN Security Council to increase UN support for stability and reconstruction in Iraq, and mandating quarterly progress reports to Congress. Such efforts are essential in order to contain the current war, stabilize the region, and ultimately bring an end to the conflict, allowing US forces to withdraw from Iraq.
