On January 8th, a Knesset committee voted overwhelmingly for an amendment to the Division of Property Law that would provide equality for women in Israeli divorce laws. Current Israeli law states that in order for a get, a Jewish divorce, to be granted, Israeli men must be willing to divorce their wives. Jointly held property and other assets are not divided until that get is finalized. Amending the Division of Property Law would allow the division of assets before the granting of the get, in cases where the proceedings have dragged on more than a year. This change would reduce the amount of coercion and blackmail that Israeli men are able to leverage during divorce proceedings under existing laws.

The full Knesset will soon vote on this issue and strong opposition is expected. This amendment will only become law if the leaders of the supporting parties stand firm and strongly support this amendment for women's rights.
