Urge Israel to Drop Unjust Charges Against Woman Praying at the Wall

Most of the time, laws are meant to protect rights. In some places, in some times, laws do the opposite. Such a law was enforced when Nofrat Frenkel was arrested for wearing a Jewish ritual prayer shawl at the Western Wall in Jerusalem. Frenkel and 41 other women had been participating in a monthly Rosh Hodesh service with Women of the Wall, a group that holds women's prayers at the Western Wall on the first day of each new Hebrew month. While many of these participants were wearing Tallitot, Frenkel was the only one carrying the Torah scroll. The police told Frenkel that she was being charged because of "performing a religious act that offends the feelings of others."
