Soon, the Senate will take up the Paycheck Fairness Act (S 182), legislation that would -- along with the recently enacted Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act -- help end wage discrimination. In 1963, Congress took the initial step toward eliminating wage discrimination by passing the Equal Pay Act, legislation that made it illegal for employers to discriminate based on gender. Unfortunately, women today are still fighting for equal pay, earning only 78 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. To remedy this injustice, the Paycheck Fairness Act would deter wage discrimination by taking steps to encourage more transparency in the workplace; providing more training for, and enforcement by appropriate government agencies; and strengthening penalties against employers who violate equal pay laws. Passage of this bill would constitute a huge victory for women everywhere by promoting fair pay in the workplace.
