On the Anniversary of the Ledbetter Act, Speak Out for Equal Pay

January 2010 marks the first anniversary of the enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, legislation that guaranteed that victims of wage discrimination could have their day in court. That bill, while critically important, was only one step toward achieving pay equity. Soon the Senate will consider the next step, the Paycheck Fairness Act (S 182), legislation that would help prevent the kind of discrimination for which the Ledbetter law sought legal recourse. Specifically, it will strengthen our nation's laws by: barring wage discrimination, strengthening penalties for equal pay violations, and prohibiting retaliation against workers who inquire about employers' wage practices or disclose their own wages.

I urge you to cosponsor the Paycheck Fairness Act (S 182) and encourage your colleagues to swiftly pass this important legislation.
 
In the decades since the passage of the Equal Pay Act, the wage gap has narrowed. However, women continue to earn only 78 cents for every dollar earned by their male counterparts. This disparity compromises the economic security of women, children, and families and constitutes an affront to civil rights and economic justice that must be rectified.
 
S 182 would address these continuing inequalities by: strengthening the Equal Pay Act of 1963; taking steps to encourage more transparency in the workplace; providing more training for, and enforcement by, appropriate government agencies; and strengthening penalties against employers who violate equal pay laws.

One year ago, you took an important step toward wage equality when you passed the Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act. But, as Lilly said one year ago, passing the Ledbetter Act without also passing the Paycheck Fairness Act is like giving someone a nail but not a hammer.
 
I urge you to cosponsor the Paycheck Fairness Act, a bill that gives employees and employers the tools to end pay discrimination.
