The short explanation of this alert was:

August 24 marks the one-year anniversary of the Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) approval of Plan B emergency contraception for over-the-counter sale to women ages 18 and older. The FDA's approval, while late in coming and inexplicably restricted, eliminated a major barrier to access to emergency contraception for individuals 18 and older. However, many women -- especially young women -- still face tremendous challenges when trying to obtain emergency contraception.

Now Congress has an opportunity to build on last year’s victory by creating policies that protect women’s access to legal contraceptives, including emergency contraception. Earlier this year in an effort to do just that, Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY), Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT), and Sen. Frank Lautenberg (D-NJ) introduced the Access to Birth Control Act (HR 2596/S 1555), a bill that would ensure that women have timely access to birth control, including emergency contraception, at pharmacies.
