Judge Southwick's record as a judge on the Mississippi Court of Appeals demonstrates his hostility toward civil rights. He wrote a separate concurring opinion in a case that asserted that a "homosexual lifestyle" could be used to deprive a parent of custody of her own child and he ruled that a state employee’s dismissal for calling a co-worker a racial epithet was unwarranted.
